Orienteering

In this event each runner is provided with a map with assorted things marked on it e.g. water hydrants, or pillar boxes, or telephone kiosks. The intention is to navigate your way to as many of these as possible within a set time. Points are awarded on the basis of the distance to the marked object and penalty points deducted for being late back.

A difficult one to handicap fairly, although the principle is simple enough. The faster runners will get more points and, therefore, their score needs to be reduced in some way.

This event requires greater preparation than most. However it also is one of the more enjoyable events. Anyone wanting detailed instruction on this sort of event would do well to contact Chris Wales, who has organised most of the orienteering which we have done so far.
